This dance originates from the Southern German Alps where, in the 18th century, there were several dances with specific names: Weller, Walzer, and Landler. The Viennese waltz was inspired by Landler. This type of dance is based on cyclic movements and repetition of two figures. Its salient feature is the alert and quick music, as well as the rises, falls and side sways of the dancers’ bodies, resembling a pendulum.
The Viennese waltz is a moving dance in ¾ and the tempo is 60 measures a minute.
