Tango was the first dance in Europe before WWI, in a tempo of 36 measures per minute. It was preceded by the milonga dance, which included the movements of the head and shoulders, stopped suddenly, that are currently typical to modern tango.
Tango emerged in Paris, in the Argentinean community; however, it was not accepted in London until 1907, as it was considered too erotic and was opposed by many. It was accepted in Europe after 1920 and its figures were standardized at the London Conference. The difference between tango and the other standard dances is that there are no rises and falls and the knees are always flexed in tango.
Tango is a dance in 4/4 and its tempo is 33 measures a minute.
