Samba comes from Africa, but it was danced primarily in Brazil, as a national dance. Countless styles of samba are danced during the Rio Carnival. Samba appeared in Europe in 1925, but it was only after WWII that it gained popularity. Walter Laird and his partner Lorraine made a special contribution to developing it.
In order to become a genuine samba dancer, a person needs to have an exuberant performance. Many of the figures performed today need a bounce (flexing and then straightening the leg and the ankle that supports the whole weight of the leg) and a strong hip swing.
The musical measure is 2/4, with accents on the second beat. The most used tempo is 50 – 52 measures per minute.
