Developed during WWI in New York’s suburbs, it was initially danced by the Caribbean and African dancers. Quickstep and slowfox have common roots. In the ‘20s, many bands were playing slowfox too fast, which sparked discontent. It was then when the two dances split: one was born by slowing the tempo down, and the other one by keeping the 48 – 50 measures a minute. Charleston left a mark on quickstep as well.
